Malaysia stumbles again
Malaysian National Cricket Team stumbled once again and fell to the Sharjah
Cricket Council Select XI by a wide margin of 6 wickets in their last
outing of their brief tour at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
The start of the innings after being put into bat first was far from
promising as Sajjad Butt and Asim Saeed removed both the openers without
scoring in their opening salvo. On the back foot at 5 for 2, one of the few
successes on the tour. Ramdas K, again took on the cudgel and stroked a
fine 37 off 43 balls that included 7 fours. He found a perfect foil in
Rohan who dropped anchor at the other end and then finally went on to hit a
disciplined 51 off 90 balls with five fours. The duo resurrected the
faltering innings and took the score to 61 before a twin strike of
successive deliveries by talented Danish Jabbar (2 for 25) turned the game
around once again.
Struggling to cope under intense pressure, Rohan and Muniandy (31 off 73
balls) made slow but steady progress and added 71 runs for the fifth wicket
before another double blow removed both the set batsmen.
At 132 for 6, the home team seemed to control the game and made further
inroads to pick up wickets at regular intervals that reduced the visitors
to 157 for 9. Last man Chew Pok however, used the long handle to good
effect to hit a quick unbeaten 13 off only 8 balls with a four and a six to
take the final score to a fighting 178 for 9 in 50 overs.mahmmod (2 for 30)
was another notable performer of the day.
With half of the battle won, the home team simply had to bat sensibly and
they did just that despite a horrendous start when both the openers fell
cheaply like their rivals at the dismal total of 8 for 2. The steady
influence of vastly experienced Nasir Siddique and young Atif Iftikhar
steadied the rocking boat as the duo added 75 good runs for the third
wicket to take the total to 83 before the former departed after compiling a
highly enterprising 54 off 67 balls with four fours and a couple of sixes.
Atif went on to score a highly disciplined knock of an unbeaten 56 which
should give him a lot of confidence after a run of poor scores. He held one
end intact to ensure a good victory as Mairaj (22) and talented Kashif Khan
(26 n.o.) made useful contribution in a satisfying performance. Suresh (2
for 24) bowled well and caused the early scare.
The visitors on their part must have gained invaluable experience, despite
losing all their games and that will keep them in good stead when they
return for the ACC Trophy in November, hosted by ECB.
