ISC thump CitiBank
The 3rd edition of Sharjah Ramadan Floodlit Cricket Tournament for 'B'
Division got off to sedate start.
The tournament named as the "Pass Pass Gold Cup" after the mouth freshener was
declared open in a simple ceremony by Mr. M.Khoory and Satya Prakash Menon,
the local representatives of the sponsors of the tournament, Baba Global India Ltd.,
in presence of the officials of the Sharjah Cricket Council.
In the inaugural match, fancied Indian Sports Club lived up to its billing
and thumped Citibank by a big margin of 113 runs to stamp their authority
with comparative ease. The architect of their victory was none other than
peerless Devender who struck a fine 79 off 89 balls to steer his team to an
imposing total of 252 all out in 29.3 overs.
Put into bat first, ISC made full use of the opportunity offered to them
and surged ahead with positive approach. Though they took time to find
their bearings in alien conditions under floodlights at the Sharjah Stadium
in which they lot two early wickets that reduced them to 14 for 2, they
soon settled down to torment the opposition.
Leading the way as usual was gifted Devender who pulverized the attack with good sensible
batting. The support came from skipper Shaji (29) and Pawan (27) before Tarun Khanna (32
off 21 balls with 2 fours ad a six) swelled the total in a late flourish in
the slog overs.
It was the depth of the strong batting line up which carried the day for them as ISC finished
strongly in the end. But for Ali Irfan, who pulled his back a bit by picking up four
late wickets for 31 in 4.2 overs, the total could have been much more. Stephen (3 for 44)
was the other bowler to make any impression along with Vikram (2 for 18).
Facing a stiff target, Citibank could not do much as the poor start took
its toll. Fall of the wickets at regular wickets and the ever mounting run
rate ultimately did them in as they were restricted to the final total of
139 in 30 overs to concede the match by a big margin. Shaun (45) was the
only batsman to offer some resistance but the rest of the batsmen
disappointed with a lackluster display. Old war horse Shaji (2 for 11) and
Tarun (3 for 15) grabbed the bowling honours.
