ECB leave NMC in shock

BY : SYED WASEEM AFZAL.
ECB Blues cemented their credentials when they continued their relentless march and scattered yet another opponent on the way as formidable NMC were the helpless victims this time around to face their newfound wrath and promptly fell by 3 wickets on Thursday, 13th November 2003 in the ongoing CSS Homeward Bound Trophy for the XVI Sharjah Ramadan Floodlit cricket tournament – A Division, conducted by the Sharjah Cricket Council.

The decision to bat first after winning the toss, backfired severely for NMC, as ECB bowlers dished out a well nigh performance to pull the rug out of the feet of the seasoned campaigners. Leading the rout was the opening duo of Ali Asad and Asim Saeed (2 for 22), who stuck to the task and reduced the opposition to a precarious 24 for 3.

To rub salt to wounds, Mohd Ausaf Ali (3 for 17) bowled beautifully with cunning intelligence and coupled with two run outs, NMC plunged to a disastrous 46 for 7.

Chamara Zoysa (42), who was shaping up well after a sound start too made his way back to the pavilion on the back of a cruel run out as ECB Blues began to assert their absolute authority and stranglehold over the proceedings.

Mohamed Tauqir (2 for 21) magnified NMC’s woes, who had to be grateful to the late order trio of Yogesh Mistry (19), Imitaz Razool (12 not out) and Shadeep (12 not out) for adding some modicum of respectability to an otherwise dismal total of 122 all out in 33.3 overs.

Set to chase a modest target, ECB Blues made heavy weather of the minimal requirements when they batted shakily against an inspired attack and only had to wait till the last over of the innings to complete the victory rituals.

Things started badlly for ECB when they lost keymen Asim Saeed and Nadeem early on but Atif Ali (13) rescued the innings and altered the state of affairs along with Mohd Afzal (34) as the third wicket stand realized 28 handy runs.

However, NMC came back strongly and picked up a couple more wickets before skipper Naeemuddin Aslam (27) assumed the responsibility and led by an example to calm the troubled waters.

With the game evenly poised when ECB needed another 35 from the last five overs, Mohd Tauqir (13 not out) and Rashid (5 not out) kept their cool under trying conditions to steer the team home safely in 34.4 overs.

Chamara Zoysa (2 for 14) and Kaif Gaury (2 for 32) claimed the bowling spoils.
