COACHING
TIP
OF THE WEEK
The Most Important Skill
Cricketers and coaches often get so caught up with the technical side of batting and forget about the most important
skill. That is of course the skill of watching the ball. So often it is said that the top players have so much time to play their
shots. This basically means that they visually observe the ball as soon it leaves the bowlers
hand. With this early observation the brain can quickly plot the flight path and speed of the delivery and as a result of this the batsman can get quickly get himself into position to best play the delivery.
We often look at players that are struggling for form and assess that their lack of footwork is their
problem. This is absolutely correct, but of course, it is very difficult for a batsman to move his feet well if his ball watching skills are
poor. If you are not focusing on the ball you will have no idea of where the ball will pitch and therefore no idea of where or how to move your feet.
The eyes must receive the information and then pass this on to the feet. It
is therefore very important that players practice the ball watching skill. Of
course this can be concentrated on during normal practices, but from time to time it is good to do some special ball watching skills.
A good drill to develop the necessary focus can be done by placing numerals, letters
or shapes (circle, square, triangle etc) on the balls. The coach can then throw the ball to the player who shouts out what marking is on the ball before he catches it. This can also be done with the bat in
hand.
In other words the batsman call out the marking on the ball before hitting
it. This can be advanced with the batsman being asked to drive balls with digit 1 on them, defend balls with the digit 2 on them and to leave the balls with the digit three on
them (different coloured dots on the ball can be used).
